Five factors to consider when designing your space

Want to create a harmonious, practical and inviting interior? Here's five factors to consider that will help you transform your space and take it to the next level.

1) Form

The way the space looks (sometimes referred to as form) is what interior design is historically known for. Does the space appeal on an aesthetic level? Does it have style and personality? Is it beautiful? While it remains an essential ingredient, it's not the only contributor when creating a great space...

2) Functionality

Is the space designed to serve its intended function and purpose? Does it address the needs of the people occupying it? Can you complete the required tasks there - and are you clear on what the most important tasks actually are? If everything is a priority, nothing is a priority! Getting clear on this is a great next step.

3) Feeling

A vital factor when adopting a holistic approach to interior design, the feeling a space evokes impacts how you experience it and the mark it leaves on you. This can vary greatly depending on the intention of the space. Examples include feeling energised, calm, rested, relaxed, social, connected, stressed, overwhelmed, playful, joyful, peaceful and creative.

4) Flow

How you move around the space. From a physical perspective this is tied closely to functionality - how you navigate through the room and move within it. It can also be looked at from a visual perspective. How does the space 'flow' when you look at it? Where is your eye drawn to? Is there a main point of focus that stands out? Is there a natural path to follow?

5) Flair

The decorative accents and finishing touches which make the space distinctly yours. These are the pieces that express who you are - your personality, hobbies, interests and memories. Flair represents the people who use the space. Their history. When implemented intentionally, these elements ensure that your space is unique. Unlike any other.

It's what makes your space special.
