5 ways to create a calming environment at home

Need some more calm in your home (or life in general)?  Here’s 5 ideas to get you started.

1) Be intentional with YOUr lighting choices

Lighting plays a huge role in creating mood and ambiance in any interior space. Do you notice a difference in how you feel when you’re in an office or shopping centre flooded with fluorescent light compared to a moody, softly-lit bar or spa?

These examples illustrate just how varied lighting design can be. When applied correctly, it should reflect the type of interior you’re in and the activities that take place there, consequently creating a particular vibe, mood or feeling.

2) Clear clutter in your home

Clutter and disorganisation can quickly lead to feelings of overwhelm, making it difficult to switch off and relax. And while decluttering is one solution, it’s not the only way.

Ensuring that your room has adequate storage that is fit for purpose can help keep items stored out of sight when not in use.

You don’t need to throw everything away and become an ultra minimalist. It’s more about being deliberate about what you’re holding onto and ensuring that everything has a place. This helps you to stay organised, minimise the amount of time spent tidying up and also find things when you need them.

3) Opt for calming colours

Did you know that colour psychology is a thing? There’s a reason why particular colours are used in certain applications, it’s because they can elicit a response in us. Red for example is bold and attention grabbing. It can symbolise anger, love and passion. The colour red is said to also lead to an increased appetite, which can explain why so many fast food businesses use it in their signage and branding.

If you’re looking to create a calm room, you may like to introduce soft, muted hues or natural colours (such as those found in nature) like greens, blues, beiges and browns to create a peaceful interior space.

4. Consider aroma

I’m a big believer in engaging as many of the senses as possible when looking to create a feeling in a space.

A great way to dial up the zen feels is by engaging your sense of smell. Here’s a couple of ways you can do it:

  • Use scented candles, diffusers or incense

  • Bake your favourite treats

  • Use a room spray or pillow spray

  • Switch out your regular laundry detergent for a scented option when you’re washing your sheets.

Scent is deeply personal, so there’s not a one-scent-fits-all solution here. No matter your choice, it’s bound to add a whole other dimension to your space.

5) Add natural elements

Bringing touches of the outdoors in is a great way to create a feeling of peace and calm in an interior space. This might be by using natural materials in your furniture and decor selections, or even when making selections for an upcoming build or renovation project, such as timber or stone.

Another option is to introduce artwork or photography depicting nature to promote relaxation, or incorporate indoor plants or a bouquet of flowers for a simple yet effective update.

Want to feel more calm and relaxed at home? A room refresh may be right for you.
